Sunday Reflection: Having the Courage to Give the Gift Being Asked of You.

Timidity makes a person modest.  It makes him or her say, ‘I’m not worthy of being written up in the record deeds in heaven or on earth.’  Timidity keeps people from their good.  They are afraid to say, ‘Yes, I deserve it.’  ~  Maya Angelou

Imagine today that you are being asked one thing:  That Christ/Love/Spirit asks that He may use your eyes today so that He may redeem the world.  He asks this gift of you so that he may offer peace of mind to you and take away all of your terror and pain.  [Taken from ACIM Lesson 295.]

How do you feel?

My immediate response was,

Please wait right there.  It’s a mess in here!  My mind is full of dust bunnies, clutter and painful stories.  Let me clean it all up and then you can come in and look at the world through my eyes, with your eyes.

Seriously, this is what I do, and if you are like me, you probable do it, too.  Perhaps it is a fear of judgment, or as Maya Angelou writes above timidity or modesty, neither of which is rooted in courage.

The entire scene cracked me up.  Here, I was treating the Spirit’s request to give the gift of using my eyes today like I would a friend who had asked me for a ride in my car.  Feverishly straightening up the mess, gathering things and throwing them in the back seat, all the while apologizing for the general state of affairs in my car which I am sure has some reflection on my overall mental wellbeing.

To quote one of my all time favorite songs:

Isn’t it ironic?  Don’t you think?

If instead I simply had stepped aside and gave the gift that was being asked of me, all of that rigamoroll would have been unnecessary because I would have received the peace of mind that was being offered.  The sight that takes away all of the terrible stories I like to spin and pet in my mind.

So, I asked for a do over.  I replayed the scenario in my mind all over again, but this time, I had the courage to step aside.

Ah.  Relief.

Give it a try.

And then, take that eyesight and look back on your past week and forward into the next.  What do you see with eyes like that?
